Not Curses
Working with Others Toward our People’s Return to Righteous Living and Sovereignty
Our Name
BNC’s name derives from one of its publications, Blessings Not Curses: Countering the Deleterious Effects of Profanity on the African (Black) Community. It asserts that the profanity used or accepted by too many in our community:
- is not African, not Maatic,
- runs afoul of the high calling of Mdw Ntr and other African revelations on the power of the spoken word to define, transform and elevate a society,
- originates from the spirit and languages of the colonizers-and-enslavers of our people,
- compromises our spiritual strength and spiritual potential by polluting our spiritual environment,
- is an insidious, largely unacknowledged and insufficiently-addressed encumbrance and contravention to our Liberation efforts… and
- must be abandoned — and clean speech reinstituted and expressions of blessings increased — in order to make real progress on our road back to Righteous Living and Sovereignty.
Our Values
In our People’s (African/Black People’s) Return to Righteous Living and Sovereignty, Blessings Not Curses (BNC) – through publications, classes, workshops, lectures, and partnerships with, promotion of and participation in African Educational village-institutions – emphasizes several tenets.
